Job Description / Duties
The Engineering Centre for Leadership & Entrepreneurship in the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Specialist, Engineering Leadership for approximately 2 years.
Reporting to the Manager, Engineering Leadership Centre, the Specialist will organize and implement initiatives that support and enhance the development of leadership and entrepreneurship skills for students. Projects will include the Engineering Leadership program, Mentoring initiatives, and co-curricular activities related to student engagement and entrepreneurship. The successful candidate will bring experience in engineering leadership development, facilitating workshops, and event coordination.
The position operates on a regular work week schedule (Monday to Friday) equating to 35 hours per week, with some variances in start and end time. During peak periods, this position will regularly organize and attend events outside of normal working hours on a shifted schedule.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Lead all components of the Engineering Mentoring Program, including training, program development, industry engagement, communications, and events
- Develop targets for participation and learning in Engineering mentoring initiatives
- Coordinate Engineering Leadership Program activities, including registration management, scheduling, reviewing workshop content, and inviting speakers
- Organize an annual Engineering Leadership Conference for approximately 300 engineering students
- Hold regular involvement coaching sessions to support students in finding leadership opportunities to support their goals and interests
- Regularly organize and attend Leadership workshops and events, such as the Engineering Leadership Program
- Organize entrepreneurship themed workshops or events, such as pitch clinics or design challenges
- Liaise with prospective industry mentors or program partner and compile a database of campus and industry partners for the program
- Coordinate the student-led 'Community Project' in the leadership program, including reviewing work plans, supporting with team roles, and following-up on key deadlines
- Develop reflection materials to understand the student learning in leadership programming
- Act as a key resource for the Leadership Centre to provide a consistent and professional experience for students
- Provide engineering-specific orientations programming for over 800 incoming undergraduate students to create an engaged student community
- Support the Engineering Student Society executive in events such as Frosh, to ensure inclusive and professional event opportunities
- Collaborate with our Marketing team to create promotional materials and SWAG items when needed for the Leadership Centre
- Attend and support events which may include, student group initiatives, leadership receptions, or award ceremonies
- Compile resources and coordinate leadership workshops for student executives on clubs, teams, & associations
- Under the direction of the Manager, support with implementation of other leadership initiatives in engineering, such as the Maier Leadership Program and the PwC Project Management Workshops
When needed, develop new leadership opportunities to align with strategic priorities
Qualifications / Required Skills
- Post-secondary degree and a minimum of 5 years of related experience within an education institution, Graduate degree is preferred
- Experienced in developing & facilitating student leadership workshops that incorporate student development or engineering leadership theories and pedagogies
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in facilitating entrepreneurship development and ability to integrate topics into leadership programming
- Knowledge and 3 or more years of experience with program and strategic event planning; leadership program experience required
- Demonstrated experience coaching and supporting students; Skilled at public speaking and engaging groups of students
- Knowledge of Engineering Education, experience working with engineers, and knowledge of APEGA competencies
- Strong planning and organizational experience with a demonstrated ability to set priorities and complete multiple tasks within specified timelines, as well as effective decision making and problem solving ability (5 years experience required)
- Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability effectively engage in interactions with others in a competent and professional manner
- Excellent oral and written skills; ability to draft clear, concise, and professional correspondence and create visually appealing presentations, learning guides, and promotional materials
- Team player with ability to establish positive relationships with staff, students, and stakeholders across campus and external to the University
- Expert computer skills including Microsoft Office, Email applications, social media, and web-based systems
- Expected to frequently shift work schedule evenings and weekends to meet multiple demands and pressures to produce high-quality work
