Position Summary:

Reporting to the Executive Director, Soutar Career Centre, the Career Services Consultant will counsel, advise BCom management students and support their career planning and skills development; contributing toward and improving on unit objectives, practices and on career issues, job market opportunities, and job search strategies. The role is to ensure that students in specific management streams are aware of the tools that will ensure their successful career and professional development. The candidate will also participate in the development and implementation of market strategies to promote the Career Services activities and participate in career planning initiatives. Contribute as necessary to internal and external communications; and support the development of industry- and function-specific knowledge.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide individualized career coaching to current BCom students to support their career planning and skills development, including the administration of career assessment tools, preparation for on-campus recruiting (cv/cover letter/interviews) and self-directed job search.
  • Collaborate with other members of Career Services to prepare and provide all relevant workshops. Participate in organizing of career events.
  • Manage specific programs, where applicable; i.e. BCom mentoring.
  • Manage relationships of assigned corporate partners in order to maintain service excellence and to maximize job opportunities for students.
  • Maintain contacts in the business community, develop and implement strategies to increase employer base. Build and maintain relationships with stream-relevant student association and coordinate career related activities involving corporate partners.
  • Develop career-related materials. Participate in the creation of video tutorials, resume book reviews, and other as required.

Education and Experience:

DEC III

Three (3) years’ related experience

OR

Undergraduate Degree

One (1) year related experience

Other Qualifying Skills and Abilities:

Minimum five (5) years’ work experience in a professional North American setting, preferably in an HR, coaching or customer service role. Strong professional demeanor, trustworthiness and ability to manage sensitive information with discretion. Excellent communication skills in order to communicate with corporate partners and other stakeholders. Strong attention to detail. Exceptional emotional intelligence and relationship building skills; ability to engage with and adapt to an international and diverse clientele. Strong work ethic and demonstrated initiative; motivated to “go the extra mile” in delivery of an outstanding customer experience; willingness to work flexible hours, particularly between August and December. Comfortable with ambiguity and willing to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; and a strong team player. Demonstrated ability to work in a Microsoft environment using word-processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software; proficiency to work with internal database and CRM systems. Adept and fluent in English and French (spoken and written).
