Job Description / Duties

The Office of Health Professions Student Affairs (OHPSA) offers services to students in the Doctor of Medicine, Medical Radiation Sciences, Rehabilitation Sciences and the Physician Assistant Program in the areas of Wellness, Career Development, Learning Skills and Student Life/Community Outreach. The OHPSA helps students navigate these challenges and support their development as a healthcare professional.

Under general direction, works as a member of the Office of Student Affairs, Faculty of Medicine team. The Career Counsellor will provide individual and group career counselling to Doctor of Medicine students diverse in age, culture, race, gender, sexual identity, and educational background. The Counsellor will develop resources and establish networks with University of Toronto and external career development/counselling agencies. Activities will include advising and coaching students on career management process, conducting small and large group seminars/workshops, specifically tailored outreach sessions and other events. Contributes to the ongoing development of the Doctor of Medicine career counselling program and processes to improve ability to perform the duties of a Career Counsellor.

Qualifications / Required Skills

(Minimum)

Education:

Master's degree in counselling or related discipline or equivalent education and experience.

Experience:

Minimum five years experience with students in professional health-care-related educational/training programs. Experience in counselling on an individual or group basis.

Related experience in post secondary education/hospital setting preferred.

Other:

Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication. Demonstrated skill/aptitude in cross-cultural communication and inter-professional group facilitation; ability to work both

independently and collaboratively in a supportive environment; tolerance for ambiguity and an ability to adapt to change quickly. Research experience or demonstrated proficiency in evaluation/quality assurance an advantage. Proficient use of personal computer and relevant software applications: MS Windows; Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and Internet browser; photocopying equipment; fax machine. Proficient in use of University database systems an asset. Ability to work independently, to set priorities and work schedules to meet deadlines; demonstrated decision-making skills in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be able to interact effectively with individuals at all levels of the University and associated organizations. Demonstrated tact, discretion and sensitivity to confidential matters. Ability and willingness to travel between the University of Toronto St. George and Mississauga campuses. This position may require work to be performed outside of regular working hours and including Saturday's.

Additional Information

Start Date: As soon as possible

Working Hours: 14.5 hours/week (Flexibility to work outside of regular working hours and Saturday’s is required)

Pay Scale Group and Hiring Rate: 06B -$63,077 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $80,594 - Pay Rates effective July 1, 2010.

Pro-rated Pay Scale Group and Hiring Rate: $25,230.80 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $32,237.60-Pay Rates effective July 1, 2010.

Salary: $63,077 (Pro-rated)
