Job Description / Duties

The Career & Experiential Learning (CEL) department in a centralized unit, that is comprised of faculty and staff, within the Faculty of Student Development (FSD) at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia. The CEL department operates under a Chairperson that reports to the Dean of the Faculty. At this time, the Career & Experiential Learning department invites candidates to apply to the Indigenous Experiential Learning Coordinator position.
Under the direction of the TRU Career & Experiential Learning department, the Indigenous EL Coordinator will work collaboratively as part of the CEL team to support Indigenous students in their career education, career planning, and career development activities. The Coordinator will work with alumni, prospective employers and organizations who are seeking to recruit indigenous students from TRU. Additionally, the Coordinator will work closely with the TRU Indigenous Services office to develop Indigenous Service Learning opportunities with the indigenous community and external stakeholders.

The Indigenous EL Coordinator will perform a variety of duties and functions that support the career development of Indigenous students at TRU. The Coordinator will have a thorough understanding of indigenous culture, community-based education, and cultural programming to assist students to make meaning of their education during the transition from academics to experiential and work integrated learning opportunities.
The Indigenous EL Coordinator will:

1. Support Indigenous students with their career planning and development, via one on one meetings and class instruction
2. Develop a Service Learning program that creates opportunities for students in Indigenous communities and regional organizations
3. Participate in a variety of recruitment events, career fairs, and employer information sessions
4. Secure, coordinate, and monitor students engaged in service learning opportunities with participating organizations, corporations and Indigenous communities
5. Conduct site visits and evaluations of students engaged in EL activities
6. Develop curriculum that is culturally sensitive and appropriate
7. Be responsible for marking assignments as required
8. Maintain accurate student records and documentation and enter confidential information on the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system (Symplicity)
9. Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team that includes faculty and staff from the Career & Experiential Learning department and Indigenous Services

Qualifications / Required Skills

• Master’s degree relevant to Experiential Learning or Career Education field
• Minimum 3 years' experience working with Indigenous students relevant to the Career Education and Experiential Learning field
• Demonstrated instructional skills and experience in a post-secondary setting
• Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture and be well versed in government programs, legislation and policies that may affect Indigenous students
• Strong awareness of the challenges facing Indigenous post-secondary students
• Knowledge of regional, provincial, and national labour markets
• Superior time management, written and oral communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with diverse populations (including students, employers, Indigenous communities)
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Training in cultural safety, decolonizing theory, or indigenous studies is considered to be an asset

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: January 13, 2020 to March 26, 2021
