Job Description / Duties

The Career & Experiential Learning (CEL) department in a centralized unit, that is comprised of faculty and staff, within the Faculty of Student Development (FSD) at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia. The CEL department operates under a Chairperson that reports to the Dean of the Faculty. At this time, the Career & Experiential Learning department invites candidates to apply to the 3 year Limited Term Contract, Career Services Coordinator Faculty position.


Under the direction of the TRU Career & Experiential Learning department, the Career Services Coordinator will work collaboratively as part of the CEL team to support undergraduate and graduate students in their career education, career planning, and career development activities. The Coordinator will also work with alumni and prospective employers who are seeking to recruit students from TRU.

DUTIES

The Career Services Coordinator will perform a variety of duties and functions that support the career development of TRU students. A thorough understanding of career theory will allow the successful candidate to develop career action plans, disseminate labour market information, identify core career competencies, complete a career portfolio, develop application documents, implement interview strategies, and assist students to make meaning of their education during the transition from academics to experiential and work integrated learning opportunities. Duties will include:

  • Meeting and supporting students with the career planning and career decision making process via one on one appointments  
  • Teaching credit Career Management / Co-op 1000 sections throughout the year
  • Teaching non-credit career planning workshops / seminars across campus
  • Developing career based curriculum for workshops and courses
  • Evaluating and marking assignments in Moodle and entering grades in Banner
  • Engaging in community and employer activities to develop employment opportunities for students with organizations, corporations and agencies
  • Planning and organizing career recruitment and networking events to engage recruiters on campus
  • Conducting on-site monitoring of students engaged in experiential learning work-terms to ensure learning objectives are progressing and being met
  • Maintaining accurate records and entering confidential information on the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system (Symplicity)
  • Maintaining stats and generating reports for the Chairperson
  • Participating and assisting in university wide events that the department is involved in
  • Performing other duties as required

Qualifications / Required Skills

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree relevant to Career Education, Co-operative Education, Experiential Learning, and/or Work Integrated Learning disciplines
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience working in the Co-operative Education, Work Integrated Learning and Experiential Learning field
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in career advising, employment preparation, and supporting students through the career planning and career decision making process
  • Must have a strong work placement and monitoring experience
  • Demonstrated instructional skills and experience in a post-secondary setting
  • Must have strong attachment to business and industry, with excellent knowledge of regional, provincial, national and international labour markets/trends
  • Must have strong presentation skills to communicate with various stakeholder groups
  • Excellent knowledge of the recruitment and talent acquisition process
  • Superior time management, written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with diverse populations, including students, employers, faculty, deans, administrators and alumni
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team that works in a centralized work environment
  • Must have a proven track record in meeting deadlines and follow through on tasks
  • Must have a high degree of professionalism and be able to work effectively in a team
  • Proficiency in MS Office software, database programs, Banner and Learning Management Systems like Moodle
  • Valid Driver’s License
