POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Executive Director, Student Life Programs & Services the Director ensures that the University of Toronto provides exemplary practices that support students’ and recent graduates as they build their future in a changing world. This includes career education, career exploration, employer recruitment & engagement and work-integrated learning opportunities. The Director has primary responsibility for the organizational development, leadership and management of a team of professionals in Career Exploration & Education on the St. George campus.
Career Exploration & Education supports students and recent graduates through self-directed learning as it applies to career and further education exploration, career decision-making and employment preparation to assist undergraduate, professional and graduate students to integrate their interests, abilities, experiences and values in the development of their career aspirations.
With an understanding of career development and student learning, including work-integrated learning pedagogy, the Director will introduce and enhance services that enable intentional, personal, relevant and action-based career programming. They will ensure the services of Career Exploration & Education provide a wide variety of learning opportunities that help students find meaning and purpose, as they define it, and develop career management skills for lifelong success and well-being. The Director must be strategic in the allocation of resources and work within a collaborative framework. They must ensure evaluation measures are used to drive the effectiveness of the Centre’s work.
The Director is a member of the leadership team in the Division of Student Life and must demonstrate a commitment to the University’s principles of equity and inclusion to ensure that our students and recent graduates, especially those who may face barriers to inclusion and equity in the workplace, have the opportunity to thrive in their careers.
In collaboration with colleges, faculties, other student life departments, and academic units across the university as well as the Office of Vice-Provost, Innovations in Undergraduate Education (OVPIUE), the Director works to implement integrated and cohesive career education and work-integrated learning, in support of both co-curricular and curricular learning activities and structures for undergraduate, professional and graduate students.
The Director will also collaborate with alumni services to support the career development of our recent graduates and provide engagement opportunities for our alumni to strengthen career mentoring and work integrated learning opportunities for students. The Director also ensures that our recent graduates and alumni share their stories and experiences, best practices, and expert advice so that we can cultivate a sense of career adaptability, employability and resilience.
The Director must also encourage and support tri-campus initiatives and relationships with the Career Exploration & Education partners at the Scarborough and Mississauga campuses to ensure that all students at the University of Toronto benefit in the career and work-integrated learning opportunities and resources available.
The Director will model a commitment towards collaborative partnerships with multiple internal stakeholders and external stakeholders, partners, employers and organizations.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
I. EDUCATION:
Must have a post-graduate degree (Masters) in Adult Education, Student Development, Higher Education, Developmental or Counselling Psychology or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Education should include a focus on adult education principles, program/curriculum planning within a developmental framework, evaluation and assessment, and issues in higher education.
II. EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of 7 years’ experience as a leader and manager committed to excellence in meeting the continuously evolving career needs of diverse students in a post-secondary environment. The ability to lead and manage change in a complex and decentralized educational setting. The ability to articulate a vision, develop strategy and formulate plans to achieve an integrated service model. Experience in developing experiential and student self-directed career opportunities including assessment and learning outcomes. Demonstrated understanding of the importance of the role of career education within the context of competency development, including career readiness and career management competencies. Knowledge of the intersection of career, mental health and identity including well-being based career practices as part of a whole-person approach to career/life planning. The ability to create an inclusive environment that reflects equity and diversity at all levels. Experience working with equity-deserving students from all backgrounds and lived experiences, with an understanding of intersectionality, to develop programs & services to address their career needs, experiences and barriers as well as extensive knowledge of, and ability to collaborate and liaise with, Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color (BIPOC) and disability-accessible student and campus groups.
III. SKILLS:
• An innovator with a futuristic orientation and willingness to try new opportunities, remain informed on new career trends and best practices and lead significant change processes.
• Ability to cultivate a strong vision that promotes innovation, strategic thinking and high levels of collaboration, with the ability to motivate, inspire, support and develop a team of committed professionals to support that vision.
• Proven record in leading and developing cohesive teams, managing performance and productivity, strategic planning, and contributing to organizational leadership.
• An excellent communicator with the ability to reach all levels of the university, especially in advocating for the needs of and promoting the vision of Career Exploration & Education and the ability to artfully tell the story of the career team to all university constituents.
• A great collaborator with internal departments and external colleagues, with the ability to understand the importance of interconnectedness, build strong relationships and serve as an ambassador for Career Exploration & Education and for Student Life.
• Ability to interpret the university’s priorities, translate those priorities to the staff and integrate them into the Career Exploration & Education policies, procedures and plans.
• A strategic and data-informed decision-maker with strong assessment skills who is also able to set expectations across the department and devise and implement plans based on evidence.
• Strong and visionary budgeting and finance skills, with the ability to be strategic in all budgetary decisions and forecasting.
• Demonstrated knowledge and facility in applying current and emerging technology to enhance career center operations and services.
IV. OTHER:
• Expert knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, student learning & development theory, career counseling/advising processes (individual and group), career coaching techniques, career decision making, job search techniques, occupations, labour market conditions, employer recruitment needs and strategies.
• Comprehensive understanding of the academic partnerships, trends and current and emerging needs of the post-secondary student population and the value of the student experience related to student success, retention and graduation.
• Planning, organizational and prioritizing skills; ability to engage in multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
• Project management skills; ability to direct large-scale projects.
• Research, analytical and reporting skills related to current trends and best practices.
• High degree of political acuity and judgment including expert negotiation skills.
• Ability to interact effectively and cooperatively with individuals at all levels and build sustainable relationships.
