The Manager, Workplace Learning is responsible for advancing the University s goals with respect to enriched educational experiences and career development for UBC undergraduate and graduate students through experiential workplace learning opportunities both on and off campus. The incumbent leads the overall strategy for employment, volunteer and internship opportunities coordinated through the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers for undergraduate and graduate students and alumni; internal and external employer relationships; the development and strategic management all aspects of UBC s wage subsidy programs for students; the implementation and strategic use of the Centre s CRM technology, and; liaises with units and programs within the university to promote co-operative and collaborative communication with external employers and organizations.
Organizational Status
The Manager, Workplace Learning is a member of the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers staff team. The Centre is a hub that facilitates and enhances student learning through career building enriched educational experiences. Through orientation and peer mentoring, the Centre supports new students to become successful university learners, prepared to achieve their academic, personal, and career goals. It is a central point for all graduate and undergraduate students and employers on the UBC Vancouver campus to meet, connect, network and build relationships; and to research and explore career options. The Centre connects students to workplace learning, mentoring, volunteer and leadership opportunities; and offers career- and employment-related services to students, academic departments, employers, and alumni.
Reporting to the Director, Centre for Student Involvement & Careers, the Manager, Workplace Learning, leads a team of career and experiential learning educators, employer relations specialists, event planners, administrative staff, student workers, interns and volunteers. As a member of an integrated unit leadership team, the incumbent will oversee the Centre s experiential workplace learning and employer engagement strategy and operations.
The incumbent builds and sustains crucial external and internal relationships to advance the University s goals of supporting student learning and preparing career-ready graduates through workplace experiences. Externally, the Manager, Workplace Learning is responsible for building relationships with local, national and international employers, organizations, and industry association representatives ranging from senior level executives to human resources staff. Internally, the incumbent works in close collaboration with Faculties and units both within the Vice President s Students portfolio and across the University, the AMS/GSS and student groups, and all UBC experiential program service providers including undergraduate research, cooperative education, internship, international learning, volunteer, service learning, to cultivate a broad range of experiential and employment opportunities for UBC students and alumni.
Work Performed
1. Leads the overall strategy for experiential workplace learning, employment, volunteer, and internship opportunities coordinated through the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers for UBC students and alumni.
- Responsible for the strategic direction, budget (approx. $4.5m), student learning outcomes, and overall management of the on-campus wage subsidy programs, including the Work Learn Program, NSERC USRA, and other emergent programs or initiatives arising within the University or with government and community partners.
- Works collaboratively with the Director and the unit leadership team to foster a comprehensive and integrated approach to career development, workplace learning, and experiential learning.
- Develops career programming and workplace learning curriculum to address the needs of diverse audiences.
2.Provides leadership and supervision to a team of professional staff, student staff, interns, and volunteers:
- Directs, guides, and coaches staff to achieve departmental goals and outcomes.
- Sets objectives, manages outcomes, and determines resources.
- Manages professional development planning.
- Develops, facilitates, and evaluates training programs for staff, volunteers, and students.
- Recruits, hires, evaluates performance and terminates, if required.
3. Leads the overall strategy for employer relations and employer engagement.
- Oversees and participates in the development of relationships with potential employers by personal company visits, assessing client needs, linking employers to campus services, campus-wide programs and events, linking to faculty, providing strategic targeted recruitment planning and acting as a resource.
- Develops and implements comprehensive strategies to expand employment and workplace learning opportunities for students and graduates in local, national and international markets.
- Liaises with services and programs within the university to promote co-operative and collaborative communication with external employers.
- Oversees and strategically develops Centre for Student Involvement & Careers revenue generating projects and initiatives , including career fairs, recruitment activities, and employer and industry engagement programs.
4. Builds and sustains research and evidenced-based understanding to inform and evaluate the University s approaches to workplace learning for students. Including: student learning outcomes, employer feedback and evidence of student preparedness, labour market and industry trends, workplace learning outcomes, relevant legislation, employability outcomes, and work experiences of UBC students and alumni.
5. Implements and oversees outcomes assessment and program evaluation. Measures the impact of programs and services in terms of student learning, career outcomes, and service to departments and Faculties. Develops and implements a strategy to share results and raise awareness of the impact of workplace learning in developing career ready graduates.
6. Oversees the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers customer relationship management (CRM) strategy and software platform(s). Collects, researches, prioritizes and implements ideas, best practices, and recommendations for upgrades and enhancements to web-based point of contact systems. Leverages technology to establish and sustain partnerships.
7. In collaboration with Student Communications Services and the Centre s leadership group, provides strategic content direction for the Build My Career website and communications campaigns.
8. Cultivates, builds and maintains relationships with key stakeholders including University departments and faculties; Department Heads and Associate Deans, community professionals & community groups, employers, students, and alumni.
9. Works with the Director and leadership team in the development and assessment of the strategic goals of the unit.
10. Manages operational budgets and allocates resources in accordance with strategic priorities to meet the unit s objectives.
11. Manages, sets goals, and evaluates all programs and services in consideration of the Vice President Students (VPS) Student Experience Framework and the VPS service standards: respectful, accurate, and responsive.
12. Acts as a designate for the Director, Centre for Student Involvement & Careers, as required.
13. Participates on University and departmental committees.
14. Carries out any other related duties as necessary in keeping with the requirements and qualifications of the job.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Manager, Workplace Learning represents students and the University in a variety of internal and external venues. Incorrect decisions/ judgment will directly affect the UBC s reputation with the employer community and future UBC alumni. Ineffective budget planning and management will have significant operational, learning, and reputational consequences. Incorrect decisions will have impact on the employment of students, the operations of the programs, and the reputation of the Faculties and the University.
Supervision Received
Works independently, under general guidance from the Director, Centre for Student Involvement & Careers. Collaborates regularly with the Managing Director, Student Development & Services, and the unit leadership team in setting the strategic direction for the unit, and priorities of workplace learning and employer and community relations.
Supervision Given
Hires, supervises and manages the performance of the workplace learning team. Leads cross-functional teams and project teams. Hires and manages contract work performed by outside suppliers such as market research firms.
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Master's degree preferred. Minimum of five to six years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior higher education experience an asset. Experience designing and delivering complex programs including evaluating and measuring program effectiveness and outcomes required. Demonstrated ability to strategically design, implement, and evaluate experiential learning programs and educational curricula. Ability to strategically manage a complex budget with multiple funding sources. Ability to work effectively in teams and to develop and sustain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, employers, volunteers, and community members. Demonstrated experience in supervising and managing staff, preferably in a higher education environment. Ability to delegate, lead, motivate, coach and train staff. Excellent interpersonal skills and supervisory skills. Demonstrated ability to apply and evaluate literature, research, institutional data, and theoretical frameworks to establish, manage, and transform evidence-based programs and services. Excellent written and oral communication skills. A demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse communities of students and promote inclusion. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Further language abilities an asset. Excellent computer skills and willingness to learn new systems. Knowledge of career, employment and job search strategies used by students and alumni. Knowledge of Canadian Association of Career Educators (CACEE) standards and guidelines for ethical recruitment. Familiarity with human rights, labour legislation and current human resources practices. Knowledge of current trends in higher education, career development, graduate employability, and local, national, and international labour markets. Ability to work under pressure of critical deadlines. Ability to manage the complexity inherent within a multi-faceted work environment focused on broad outcomes for students. Knowledge of University systems, structures, processes, and decision making structures is an asset. Valid BC Drivers License and own transportation required. Ability to incorporate a varied workday (i.e. attend a variety of evening and weekend events year round).
Salary: 7,278.33 - $11,372.33 CAD Monthly
