Job Description / Duties

Job Summary
Career Services provides university-wide support for career development and the growth of experiential learning opportunities. We empower and support students and recent graduates to design a rewarding career journey that leverages their education and skills to impact the world positively.

Reporting to the Associate Director, Operations & Business Development, the Manager, Employer Engagement is responsible for planning and overseeing the development, implementation and evaluation of employer relationships and engagement with new organizations, and supporting existing relationship management strategies to increase internship and employment opportunities for Queen’s University students and recent graduates. The incumbent works collaboratively with other career centres and corporate relations teams in the development of employer strategies, annual plans and priorities aimed at increasing employer recruitment, and career partner engagement.

The Manager conducts labour market research, reports on industry trends and provides consulting services for the Queen’s community and employers, developing key performance indicators and metrics to align with unit goals. The Manager builds relationships with key priority employers, plans events, and works closely with contacts across the University to coordinate outreach and agreements. The Manager is responsible for working across boundaries and with many stakeholders, internal and external to the University, to build long term relationships.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinates and strengthens the relationships Queen’s University has with employers through developing strategy, systems, and institution‐wide coordination of relationship management activities; continuously seeks new opportunities to create more experiential learning and employment opportunities through external employers and community organizations for students and recent graduates

Strategically positions Queen’s University to employers and community partners as a preferred destination for the recruitment of students, interns, and recent graduates

Determines employer relations needs for internship and career education programming and develops strategies to meet needs through a comprehensive understanding of industry trends, employer expectations, and students’ preferences

Researches and develops new ways of engaging with employers, responding to their needs, and connecting them with students through enhanced employer relations; identifies threats to cultivating and maintaining strong employer relations.

Coordinates and develops appropriate marketing, promotions, and outreach strategies for employer engagement.

Identifies specific initiatives and supports for the employment of underrepresented equity deserving groups in the labour market (such as persons who identify as Indigenous, black, women, LQTBQ+, or having disabilities).

Continuously audits existing CRM technology and procedures and makes recommendations for systematic approaches to employer data collection and analysis.

In consultation with the Associate Director, develops key performance indicators, metrics, and other data necessary to promote quality, sustainability, and growth of employer relations.

Ensures accurate and timely collection of data for institutional and ministry reporting purposes; analyses and evaluates data to monitor program effectiveness and provide relevant program updates and statistics.

Represents Career Services on University and external committees or events relating to employment and employer engagement; develops and delivers presentations.

Remains informed of Ontario, Canada, and international government legislation, ethical standards, and policy documents which relate to employment, experiential learning, work integrated learning and privacy.

Plans, prioritizes, and manages the work of staff (within the Employer Relations team), providing strategic and tactical advice, guidance, and coaching.

Identifies the need for staff resources, participates on staffing committees, and makes effective recommendations regarding employee selection.

Manages performance by establishing performance standards, reviewing, and evaluating performance and conducting formal performance reviews on an ongoing basis.

Assesses staff training and development needs and ensures that employees receive training required to improve and sustain successful performance.

Investigates, addresses, and resolves employee/labour relations issues, including disciplinary matters. Makes decisions or effective recommendations on matters involving possible discipline, discharge and probationary termination.

Performs other duties/activities as required.

Qualifications / Required Skills

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
University degree required along with six years of related work experience.

Demonstrated significant business development experience.

Minimum of 3 years of experience in a management role required, including evidence of success in developing and maintaining effective relationships, program coordination and delivery; staff supervision within a unionized environment an asset.

Experience within the recruitment industry an asset.

Knowledge of Internship and employer management systems such as job posting software, event management software, or customer relationship software, is an asset.

Understanding of corporate recruitment and candidate selection/screening strategies.

Knowledge in program development and assessment/evaluation strategies.

Previous work experience within higher education environment is considered an asset.

Outstanding ability to use technology with a strong aptitude to learn new programs and systems.

May require travel outside of workplace, unusual hours or schedules, and irregular and/or high volumes and multiple and/or tight deadlines.

Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.

DECISION MAKING:

How to plan, implement and evaluate strategies for new and existing internship, work integrated learning, experiential learning, and career opportunities.

Appropriate methods to execute strategies.

Appropriate budgets and recommendations for annual and long-term budget planning.

Determine program effectiveness and recommend changes accordingly.

Annual and long-term planning decisions in consideration of diverse students needs

Determine methods for sourcing and engaging with new clients.

Determine how best to meet the needs of current partners and make recommendations to the Associate Director.

Determine how best to communicate with internal and external clients and how best to support our programs with our partners.

Prioritize own work to meet the objectives of the department.

Utilize good judgement about when to involve the Associate Director and leadership team on issues that require strategic decisions and when to make decisions and take action independently.

Monitor program effectiveness through monitoring and assessing evaluations and student and employer satisfaction and feedback; determine if the program is achieving strategic objectives.

Determine appropriate policies and procedures and decide how modifications should be proposed and implemented, creating inclusive working and learning environments.

Evaluate job candidates and make effective recommendations on suitable hires.

Make decisions and/or effective recommendations regarding transfers and promotions.

Evaluate employee performance and decide on appropriate training or coaching to address lack of proficiency in carrying out responsibilities, or remedial action for staff disciplinary situations.

Assess investigation outcomes and make effective recommendations on appropriate course of action or next steps on grievances.

Make effective recommendations on level of discipline up to discharge and probationary termination.
