Job Description / Duties

The Manager is engaged in leading, inspiring, and supporting a high-functioning team of Career Advisors that provide quality career development programming and advising for all undergraduate, graduate students and alumni at the University. The Manager directly oversees the day-to-day operations of the Career Education team, and is responsible for strategic planning, management, and coordination of the integration of career education into both curricular and co-curricular activities, which includes: client-centred, solution-focused, one-to-one appointments between students and Career Advisors; workshops; conferences; in-class sessions and career events. The successful candidate will hold space for ideation of team members, provide guidance that is grounded in realistic parameters and prioritize activities and projects to achieve team and unit goals. The Manager will also mentor and provide professional development support to the Career Education team as needed.

Embracing a growth mindset, the Manager of Career Education, will develop an assessment plan for the career development programming delivered by the team and create plans for a continuous improvement cycle. The incumbent will examine research and implement new programming utilizing evidence-based decision-making and successfully communicate this to our academic partners on-campus.

Qualifications / Required Skills

  • Requirements for this position include:
  • An Undergraduate degree in a related field (e.g., education, counselling, social work, human resources, etc.) along with at least six (6) years of experience working in career education or employment services.
  • A relevant combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Previous experience and evidenced skillset in leading, managing, and supporting a dynamic team of professional and high-functioning staff, through change and operational transformation.
  • Experience supporting student development within post-secondary, including graduate-level and international students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion, and have experience supporting diverse communities, including Indigenous people, women, newcomers, visible minorities, persons with disabilities, and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • Patience, dedication, and the ability to build rapport with various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven strategic thinking, with the ability to execute related plans and programming while understanding the nuances of the different colleges and other parties on campus,
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, developing, delivering, evaluating, and reporting on learning and development initiatives.
  • Ability to identify and leverage digital technologies to support learning, increase service access, and track performance.
  • A collaborative approach to career development is an important method of leadership in this role.
  • Ability to work collegially with other managers in the unit, specifically the Managers of Co-operative Education, fostering intentional and positive working relationships between Career Advisors and Co-operative Education Coordinators.
  • Awareness of the Canadian labour market and trends in the economy, employment opportunities, recruitment practices, and human rights issues pertaining to hiring processes and potential impacts for post-secondary students and recent graduates/alumni.
  • Formal training and certification in career development (e.g., Career Development Practitioner Certification), vocational assessments (e.g., Strong Interest Inventory, Myers Briggs Type Indicator), counselling or coaching, learning and development, are preferred.
  • Knowledge of the University’s academic programs and procedures would be considered an asset.
