Category: ManagementThe Director of Career Services and Counselling provides leadership for the College’s career development and graduate employment strategy and the management of career development programs and services, co-op education and counselling. The incumbent will be expected to play a lead role in the successful planning, delivery and evaluation of these key functional areas, including strategic objectives, best practice business processes, service promotion, performance indicators, analysis and development. The Director will ensure and measure excellent customer service delivery to a diverse study body and will manage all day-to-day operations. In particular, the incumbent will guide the current amalgamation of career related services through the change management process required to ensure Career Services is well positioned in the future. The incumbent plays a leading role in ensuring an integrated and systematic approach to counselling services, one that is fully integrated into college life and in sync with the development of a proactive, health and well-being strategy.
Responsibilities:
• Plays a lead role in the drafting and implementation of a College career development framework and graduate employment strategy
• In collaboration with senior managers and aligned with the College’s mission, vision, and values, departmental and corporate business plans, strategies and initiatives, executes an integrated strategy and set of operational objectives for all functional areas
• Oversees the development of service polices, protocols and operational for all functional areas
• Ensures compliance in all areas, including external policies (e.g. Human Rights) and professional codes (e.g. counselling regulations)
• Ensures all students who use Career and Counselling Services receive tailored and quality advice and/or counselling and educational input delivered in a professional, welcoming, respectful, positive and safe environment
• Ensures a coordinated, proactive, partnership approach to working with other key services and schools
• Overseas the delivery of an annual series of employment, career and post-graduate recruitment fairs
• Operates a network of faculty and staff, alumni and employer mentors, to whom students can seek career insights and guidance
• Overseas the development of an extensive employee network to offer paid employment, learning and mentoring opportunities
• Provides leadership and strategic vision for counselling services (personal, career and academic skills counselling)
• Supports each campus to ensure an inclusive, integrated, responsive and systematic approach to the delivery of counselling
• Ensures Counsellors are appropriately trained, advised and supported and the relevant administrative systems and procedures in place
• Working with the Coordinator of Counselling, monitors counselling trends and initiates responses accordingly
• Maintains a high level of performance via effective recruitment, development, motivation, evaluation and training of faculty, support and administrative staff, in the key functional areas. Determines training needs for staff and implements a training plan
• Coordinates, interprets and appropriately applies Collective Agreements, Student Rights and Responsibilities, Academic Policy, Discrimination and Harassment Policy, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other relevant policies and procedures
• Directs Career Services and Counselling budgets in conjunction with the Administrative Manager and consultation with the Dean
• Provides a degree of involvement in case-work and front-line activities, where appropriate and required
Qualifications/Experience:
• Masters Degree in Counselling/Career Development, Sociology, Psychology or Student Development or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Minimum Seven years related work experience in career development and counseling and management experience, experience in a post-secondary institution is an asset
• Proven experience with, the application of cutting-edge approaches to the development and delivery of career and counselling services
• Experience with career development, employment and skills based programming and curriculum design, as well as experience developing learning centered services and engagement programs for students
• Experience with strategic planning and project management
• Demonstrated experience in developing, monitoring and directing budget activities
• Demonstrated research, problem-solving and analytical skills: data collection, analysis and resource building
• Demonstrated knowledge of all relevant legislation in areas of human rights, diversity and accessibility
• Proven ability to develop and promote effective internal and external partnerships
• Proven negotiating, mediation, conflict resolution and crisis intervention skills, including case work management
• Demonstrated experience in developing communication and marketing strategies to reach a diverse population
• Experience of successful execution of projects based on “best practice” business processes, systems and performance indicators
• Proven people-centered leader, including experience in the delivery of change management and creation of client focused initiatives
• Proven leadership skill to maintain high performance levels through effective recruitment, training, motivation and staff evaluation
• Proven ability and experience to build and participate in teams and foster relationship building
• Proven experience managing in a unionized setting is an asset
