Job Description / Duties

The Manager, Career and Professional Development is responsible for leading the strategic development of comprehensive programs and services that advance the University’s capacity to prepare career-ready graduates, foster student leadership, and enhance students’ development of professional capacities through participation in student life and enriched educational experiences.

Reporting to the Director of the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers, the Manager, Career and Professional Development manages a staff team of Student Development Officers, Career Educators, Advisors, student workers, interns and volunteers. The incumbent will oversee the Centre’s Career and Professional Development operations and lead a team to engage students in experiences that help students achieve their career and personal development goals, contribute to the exploration and development of their identity, values orientation, career interests, and understand their connection to the wider world. The Manager works in close partnership with the Director to develop a career education strategy that reflects the range of student experiences and manages budget allocations, programs and services, and evaluates all services according to standards that include respect, accuracy and responsiveness.

The scope of responsibilities includes:
• Directing, guiding and coaching staff to achieve goals; managing resources, workload and professional development of staff; and developing and delivering training programs for staff, volunteers and students.
• Managing and implementing the overall career education strategy and program design for the Centre, including the career advising and development programs.
• Overseeing and supporting the implementation of professional development initiatives for students, including the Student Leadership Conference, student leadership and volunteer training, leadership retreats and advising student teams and organizations.
• Cultivating, building and maintaining key relationships with University departments and faculties, community professionals & community groups, employers, and students.
• Leading the establishment of a framework of experiential learning for the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers and ensuring that comprehensive reflective practices are embedded in the Centre’s programs, services and student roles in order to leverage student learning and professional development.
• Implementing and overseeing an outcome measurement & evaluation program and sharing results to raise awareness of the impact of student experiences in developing career ready graduates.
• Implementing the communication and research framework for Career and Professional Development that builds research-based understanding and interpretation of information relevant to career development including labour market and industry trends, experiential learning outcomes, graduate employability outcomes, and work experiences of UBC students and alumni.
• Fostering and actively supporting a campus culture of student-led initiatives and robust campus life by consulting with undergraduate societies, and student clubs and teams to understand their leadership development needs and to identify ways that the CSIC can support their efforts.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Your qualifications include an undergraduate degree in education, social sciences, humanities, career counselling, leadership, or a related discipline plus six years of professional experience. A Master’s degree is preferred; prior higher education experience would be an asset. Required experience includes career and/or leadership development plus designing and delivering complex programs including evaluating and measuring program effectiveness.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English; further language abilities are an asset.
• Demonstrated ability to apply and evaluate literature, research, institutional data, and theoretical frameworks to establish, manage, and transform evidence-based programs and services.
• Outstanding developmental student advising skills along with demonstrated success in teaching and developing other professional staff to advise students.
• Ability to manage the complexity inherent in a multi-faceted work environment focussed on broad outcomes for students.
• A dedicated educator with the ability to see oneself as a continuous learner.
• Knowledgeable about current trends in higher education, Canadian and international labour markets, and the employability of graduates.
• Knowledge of University systems, structures, processes, and decision-making structures is an asset.

Salary: $65,656.00 - $78,819.00 (Annual)
