Job Description / Duties

The Academic Advising & Career Centre (AA&CC) fosters students’ academic and career development, with a collaborative focus on student success and engagement. This is achieved by embracing a holistic philosophy in the department’s delivery of integrated programs, services and events to our diverse student population. Within the AA&CC, the Career Development team supports and engages students and new graduates in their exploration and achievement of career, employment and further education goals. The Career Development team also operates as a collaborative hub of expertise for the campus community in supporting our diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students.

With a student-focused commitment to excellence and innovation, the Manager, Career Development leads the Career Development team in the successful development and delivery of dynamic and high impact programs, services, resources and events for undergraduate and graduate students, and new alumni. This individual works collaboratively to strengthening methods of practice and core services, including expanding resources and opportunities for students’ self-directed and experiential learning, and career education. This work is accomplished through the student-focused commitment of staff, and strong collaborations with campus and Tri-Campus partners.

The Manager, Career Development will also provide and oversee individual and group career counselling services for undergraduate and graduate students. This entails advising and coaching students on career self-management, decision-making, planning and goal setting. This also includes overseeing the research and development of outcome-oriented career education and experiential learning programming, resources and tools. The Manager, Career Development’s student-focused commitment to fostering a team approach of evidence-based practice, results-orientation, and learning and development will assure that these services and resources are responsive and impactful.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Education:
Masters degree in a counselling discipline (e.g. counselling psychology, psychotherapy, social work) or related field (e.g. behavioural sciences, adult education), or an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Preference will be given to those qualified to administer and interpret MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory and other B level instruments.

Experience:
At least five (5) years of career counselling and employment coaching experience in a fast paced post-secondary student affairs/services setting. At least two (2) of those years managing staff in a student affairs/services capacity (i.e. preferably in a unionized environment), including student staff, practicum students and interns. Proven experience developing, managing and evaluating student-focused programs, resources and services, including extensive program planning. Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to research, learn and utilize theoretical approaches and best-practices for career counselling and employment coaching, including labour market trends, occupational paths, and selection processes for higher education and employment. Proven experience facilitating highly engaging presentations, group sessions and workshops.

Skills:
Proven skill in fostering the development of and in leading a collaborative, high-performance team. Expertise in educational program and project planning, management and evaluation, with a focus on effective resource allocation and sustainability. Knowledgeable in the principles of counselling, with demonstrated ability to direct the processes that lead to change, personal development and successful navigation within the labour market. Well-developed knowledge of career development theories and models, and application of standards for the ethical and legal practice of career counselling. Knowledge of crisis intervention theories and methods and the ability to safely and effectively refer and transition clients in crisis to appropriate support services. Strong client relationship building skills, individual counselling, coaching and group facilitation skills; the ability to lead and work effectively as part of a team in order to foster and support an environment of trust, respect and collaboration; consultative skills to support partners on- and off-campus in the development and delivery of career and employment programming; excellent interpersonal skills, including demonstrated flexibility and adaptability; excellent oral and written communication skills; effective analytical and research skills, balanced with innovative thinking; superior workshop development and facilitation skills; sound presentation and public speaking skills; strong organizational skills, accuracy and attention to detail, with a proactive solutions focus. Well-developed computer skills, including proficiency with MS Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint), other software (e.g. student information system, client management and appointment booking system) and web based mail (i.e. Outlook). Experience with desktop publishing and web development would be an asset.

Must possess a student-focused commitment to excellence and innovation, with proven management and leadership skills, and the ability to develop collaborative relationships and credibility with students, faculty, staff and senior administrator. Additional Information

Salary: $73,050 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $93,419
