Job Description / Duties

At York University’s Lassonde School of Engineering, we are fusing the technical prowess of an engineer with the ingenuity of an entrepreneur, to equip students with the skills needed to become the sophisticated, forward-thinking Renaissance Engineers of the future.

Purpose: The Coop Coordinator contributes to the success of the Lassonde Co-op Program by providing superior service to students and employers and plays a key role in generating career development opportunities for Lassonde students through the targeted development of relationships with new employer partners and fostering of existing relationships. This is achieved through the effective and proactive identification, promotion and provision of services that connect students’ academic and career development needs with employers’ human resources requirements to create mutually valuable opportunities. This position will coordinate the day-to-day administration of the Lassonde co-op program and is integral to maximizing employer participation in all of LSE’s experiential education endeavours. Supports the manager in developing the co-op program and in conducting ongoing evaluation/reviews for program improvements.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Education: University Degree in a related field (such as Social Sciences, Human Resources, Business) plus training in career development, experiential education, student career advising.

Experience: A minimum of 2 years progressive and recent experience working with students in a fast-paced post-secondary cooperative education, internship or other experiential education program is required. Previous work experience should also include outreach and marketing within a business environment that includes making public presentations for instructional & informational purposes; and project management and in administering programs using a client-centred approach based on adult learning principles.

Skills: Knowledge of the following: labour market trends, employability skills, job search and career development techniques and strategies. Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with students, faculty, administration, employers and the community at large. Excellent customer service orientation and oral and written communication skills are required with internal and external stakeholders. Highly developed interpersonal, influencing and marketing skills is required to promote Lassonde students and to recruit employers to participate in LSE’s co-op program. Strong oral and written communication skills for a variety of audiences including students, faculty, administration, employers and the community. Ability to design and facilitate relevant educational presentations to the student body as part of their job readiness training is essential. Ability to develop promotional and presentation materials for stakeholders e.g. employers and community. Outstanding attention to accuracy and detail working cooperatively as a member of a team to meet unit goals and objectives. Excellent organizational skills including ability to multi-task. Good judgment and decision making skills, strong initiative; punctual and reliable; intermediate to advanced skills in MS Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint), proficiency electronic mail and computerized scheduling (Lotus Notes preferred), Student Information System (SIS), databases and social media; able to explain the use of online employment technologies to students and employers. Willingness to travel to employer locations.
