Job Description / Duties

Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Academic-Educational Excellence, the Manager, Co-operative Education & Internships is accountable for providing
leadership and effective management for all co-operative education programs across the college. The Manager is responsible for long term strategic planning,
establishing and meeting departmental objectives and overseeing ongoing process and productivity improvement. The Manager must provide leadership to
his/her staff and others in the College in promoting co-operative education and internships and in establishing relationships with employers, locally and
internationally. The Manager also plays a critical role in new program development and program roll-out for new programs that include a co-op component,
including all college degree programs.
Specific Accountabilities:
 Develops short and long term plans to promote co-operative education and internship opportunities, locally and abroad, within the College to faculty, staff
and students, and externally to the business, industry and government communities, as well as to alumni.
 Monitors ongoing departmental performance to ensure strategic goals of College are being met.
 Supports faculty in program development related to co-op to ensure the appropriate experiential learning model is implemented. Provides direction to co-op
coordinators in carrying out activities to support the career development for all co-op students of the college
 Analyzes labour market information and determines strategies to take advantage of emerging occupational trends and to integrate college planning related
to co-op job development, curriculum development and its relevance to successful work-terms, locally and abroad. Develops research methods that
incorporate these into statistical analysis necessary for both marketing and translation for access to new funding.
 Analyzes employer and college needs relative to cooperative education and develops innovative solutions that match those needs.
 Recognizes and determines strategies to take advantage of upcoming labour market trends.
 Leads staff through an operational planning process and implements strategies and actions to ensure the college's and department's goals are met.
 Integrates new technologies into planning and curriculum.
 Develops strategies to build, maintain and enhance relationships with employers and organizations to ensure the visibility of Seneca College and the Cooperative
Education department, and proactively improves the College's coop service offerings. Communicates and interacts with other College
departments related to co-op education. Represents the College at national and international conferences/events related to experiential learning / cooperative
education.
 Assesses and presents strategies for generating revenue and maximizing benefits of relationships with business and industry.
 Establishes and manages ongoing productivity and process improvement goals for the Co-operative Education Department. Manages the annual Co-op
Appreciation event which includes announcing the Co-op Student of the Year and Co-op Mentor of the Year Awards by initiating the process, overseeing
the nomination process, setting up a selection committee and organizing the event to recognize the winners.
 Responsible for the content and currency of the three Co-op web pages and the co-op Twitter account.
 Participates as an active member of the Heads of Co-op Committee (affiliated to ACAATO), CAFCE (national co-operative education association and EWO
(provincial co-operative education association).
 Maintains current knowledge and educates employers and the College regarding co-op tax credit eligibility criteria and oversees tax credit letter distribution.
 Active lead in developing and maintain the college-wide job posting and employer database system.
 Other duties as assigned

Qualifications / Required Skills

The successful candidate will have:
 Minimum 4 year degree or equivalent education, in a relevant field e.g. Human Resources/Marketing/Business etc.. (If in another field of study, state how
education is related.)
 Membership in a member of Provincial, National and World associations related to Co-operative Education including, Education at Work Ontario, Canadian
Association for Co-operative Education, World Association for Co-operative Education, Co-operative Education and Internship Association is an asset.
 Certification in Alternative Dispute Resolution as well as Career Counselling Courses are assets.
 Minimum 7 years’ experience in Co-operative Education/Work-Integrated Learning and/or Career/Employment Services. Knowledge of the post-secondary
system in general in Canada is also necessary. Sales/marketing experience is essential.
 In-depth knowledge of the programs and services offered at Seneca, and the Canadian Labour Market.
 Highly developed skills in the areas of strategic planning and budgeting, conflict resolution, performance management and critical thinking.
 In-depth knowledge of Student Registration/Records System to manage co-op student records.
 Computer skills including word processing, e-mail and understanding of relational databases for development of centralized system
 Excellent networking skills for dev elopment of new employer relationships and the optimization of existing ones
 Strong planning and organizational skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, conflict resolution skills.
 Ability to build, maintain and administer a complex departmental budget of over 1.5 million dollars, which is built according to the relative numbers of cooperative
education students in each program and Faculty – across all campuses.Experience in overseeing a revenue generating department preferred.
 Negotiation and alternative dispute resolution knowledge.
 Understanding of global economies and their impact on international employment is important
 Experience managing a team in a union environment is critical.
 Well-developed interpersonal, customer service and communication skills (verbal and written) to interact effectively with multi-cultural/racial/able students,
staff and the public are required.
