Job Description / Duties

Purpose:
Reporting to the Vice Provost of Student Engagement (SE), the Assistant Director (AD) of Student Affairs will lead the development and implementation of student activities at UNBC that focus on academic, personal and social growth, and career skills development. The AD is a key position in the integration of the Student Engagement leadership team as both a senior resource for SE staff development as well as being the lead designate for the Vice Provost. The incumbent will build and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, faculty, and a range of external contacts, and will liaise with student organizations, faculty members, administrative and academic departments to facilitate the not only student retention but their ongoing and dynamic development and success.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
 Leading strategic planning related to student affairs that aligns with the University Plan;
 Providing operational guidance and oversight to the Academic Success Centre, Career Centre, Residence Life and Student Life portfolios;
 Creating a positive environment for all students;
 Managing and reviewing student conduct cases arising on UNBC campuses or in residence;
 Contributing to the UNBC Campus, Action, Referral and Evaluation (CARE) committee to address issues arising from students in crisis;
 Directing, managing and/or overseeing academic, social, and personal life activities and events aimed at engaging the diverse student body;
 Supporting staff and volunteers (student, staff, and faculty) to engage the academic, personal, social, and career development of students;
 Establishing regular communications and collaborating with a wide range of internal and external contacts, ranging from student organizations, faculty, administrative and academic departments, to government and other external services;
 Supporting the continuous enhancement of our student leadership and recognition programs;
 Researching and leveraging the UNBC web site and social media to engage with students and promote UNBC’s student development portfolio;
 Preparing and overseeing the Student Affairs budgets;
 Developing and implementing methods to measure success of student engagement initiatives.

Qualifications / Required Skills

This position requires a Master’s Degree in the area of Adult Education / Student Services, or a Master’s Degree in Post-Secondary Education Management / Leadership, and at least five years of successful leadership in a post-secondary environment. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Experience should indicate a progressive scope including:
 demonstrated positive student-centred vision;
 proven support for diverse student populations, including Aboriginal and international students;
 demonstrated post-secondary judicial affairs experience;
 strong supervisory and coaching skills with proven leadership in a unionized environment;
 successful team building;
 excellent interpersonal and organizational skills;
 project and fiscal management skills, including the ability to develop and manage budgets that align with a strategic vision;
 working knowledge of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA);
 excellence in public presentation and communication skills.
