The mission statement for the Centre for Business Career Development (CBCD) states, “…to inspire students to explore and achieve their career potential.” To achieve this, the Manager, Centre for Business Career Development is accountable for:
Student Career Development for DeGroote’s Undergraduate, MBA and select graduate programs
Corporate Recruiting Relationships
Coordination and Management of Programs’ Objectives
Marketing of the MBA Co-op, Commerce Internship Programs and Master of Finance
Balance of Internal and External Focus - with the business community, always representing the DeGroote brand
Skills and Competencies
Student Focused
Maintains strong relations and reporting structure with DeGroote Commerce Society, MBA Student Association and other student-led clubs and associations.
Researches, develops and manages employment/experiential related projects related to integrated work learning activities.
Generates and supports faculty requests for in class presentations highlighting career development and employment planning.
Development and delivery of career development and advisory services for students facing challenges in career or employment related decision-making.
Develops and implements strategies to promote Business students and increase the profile of our students and graduates in the community.
In partnership with DeGroote’s Advancement team, develops administers the DeGroote Mentor Program that will link students with alumni and senior business professionals to advise upper year Commerce and MBA/MFIN students, assisting with their career related decisions.
Administrative
Services – identification, delivery and evaluation of innovative, effective, customer-focused, cost effective services.
Financial management - for CBCD and its experiential programs (MBA Co-op and Commerce Internship Program) that includes the collection of all student fees as this department is a fully student funded operation.
Budgets - development, revenue generation and monitoring of expenditures for two (U/G and MBA) student funded centres (total budget exceeding $1.2 M in 2014)
Human Resources – management of 11 full-time staff in this multi-program unit across two sites (Burlington and main campus); includes recruitment, supervision, staff development and evaluation. The recruitment, supervision and training of work study students and Peer Helpers (4/15 respectively pa) are also part of this portfolio.
Goal Setting – assist Student Experience team to meet its goals as required; may include partnering with Advancement for events or working with MASO/APO with MBA/BCom student recruitment.
Development of experiential learning activities - collaborate with Faculty, Area Chairs or other Student Experience departments in the development of experiential learning activities.
Student recruitment - assist in all recruitment events to assist the Faculty in meeting its enrolment targets and appropriately inform potential applicants about cooperative and experiential education opportunities in the Faculty.
External exposure and profile - supports the promotion of the profile of the Faculty of Business both within the university and to the external community.
Employer/ Employment Focused
Provides direction during the development of a cohesive, systematic marketing plan to enhance employer relationships and ensure that employers received timely, appropriate information regarding students, programs and employment/experiential related services.
Ensures that the number of employer contacts are maintained and enhanced; essential in a volatile employment market; expand the active employer data base to increase employment opportunities Remain up-to-date about Canadian and international trends and changes in the labour market as well as any issues affecting post-secondary education to ensure DeGroote’s programs are responsive to the market’s needs.
Develops and directs an ongoing employer recognition program, celebrating longstanding partnerships.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration may be appropriate with specific amount and type of experience and additional training/certification.
MBA considered a significant asset and preferred.
Experience:
Minimum 7 years in a career centre, co-operative work study program, human resources and/or employment counseling; experience with business students preferred.
Preference given to experience within an academic, recruitment or fast-paced customer focused environment
Additional experience that would be valued:
Experience in adult education and/or training, program design and delivery
Knowledge of marketing and experience in public relations
Familiarity with more than two industry sectors
Management/supervisory experience providing full human resources support and daily guidance to work unit.
The diverse activities of CBCD require excellent judgment, decision-making, and time and stress management skills.
Requires expert knowledge of experiential education, particularly in a post-secondary educational setting and career development..
Knowledge/Skills
Demonstrated competency with, and ability to conceptualize uses for, constantly evolving technology
Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills; extensive experience developing and delivering presentations to variety of individuals from CEO/management, staff to students
Ability to successfully manage multiple, overlapping and conflicting priorities while meeting deadlines
Strong ability to lead, encourage and set high performance standards for self and others
Strong facilitation skills to resolve issues related to both customer groups (students and recruiters) as well as other groups within the DeGroote School of Business, such as faculty, and other departments.
Excellent analytical skills to continually monitor internal and external trends and to develop plans to react accordingly
Excellent business development skills including the ability to plan and execute a strategy for increasing the quality and quantity of corporate recruiters.
Sensitivity to confidential information, and an ethical approach to balancing the needs of all stakeholders
Skilled at managing emotionally charged or difficult situations Confidence, professionalism and diplomacy
Excellent management skills, including an understanding of managing a service operation, and preferably in a unionized environment
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain excellent relationships in a multi-stakeholder environment to foster and facilitate excellent outcomes.

The DeGroote School of Business is focused on successfully transforming students through an inspiring and memorable student experience. In February 2014, the Student Experience team was established – three teams, the Centre for Business Career Development (CBCD), the MBA Academic Services Office (MASO) and the Academic Programs Office (APO), for Undergraduate and Specialized Graduate Programs, work collaboratively to deliver an exceptional experience to all business students, including more than 2300 Commerce students, 500 MBA students and up to 100 Master of Finance students every year.
