Job Description / Duties

The Academic Advising & Career Centre (AA&CC) embraces a holistic philosophy in its delivery of integrated academic advising, learning skills, career development and employment coaching services to students. With a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, the department operates as a cross-functional team working closely with campus partners to support student success and retention, foster student engagement and strengthen the student experience at UTSC.

Under the general supervision of the Manager, Career Development, the Employment Coach will provide to students and alumni individual coaching and facilitate workshops that will build our students’ and alumni’s ability to envision, research, pursue and obtain relevant experience that will enhance their career learning during their university education and lead to positive career outcomes when they graduate. Through one-on-one coaching and workshops, the Employment Coach will facilitate students’ learning of effective work search strategies, resume and cover letter development and interviewing techniques, and effective workplace management skills. The Employment Coach will also contribute to the development of print and online employment resources for students and the creation of new employment and workplace management programming.

This newly created position builds on the campus’ strategic focus on experiential learning. In addition to supporting students in gaining relevant and meaningful working experience, the incumbent will also support students in clarifying their core and transferable workplace competencies as a result of the learning from their various experiences in and out of the classroom.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Education: Undergraduate Degree and post-graduate education with Career & Work, Coaching or Human Resources focus or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience: 3 years’ experience supporting individuals and groups in employment transition; experience has provided exposure to a broad range of entry level work opportunities and knowledge of trends and practices that distinguish major occupational groups and industry sectors. Experience has also provided a well developed understanding of employment practice variations in the workplace, from interviewing and selection to compensation, orientation and training practices. Demonstrated experience facilitating workshops of an interactive, experiential nature.

Other: Excellent employment coaching and client service skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Sensitivity to interact with a diverse student population. Well developed computer skills in presentation software, word processing, desktop publishing (skills in Photoshop preferred), audiovisual equipment and using the internet as a search tool. Comfortable with automated computer systems (e.g. job search engines) for information gathering and job research. Creative and detail-oriented. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to take initiative with regard to employment programming, services and goals within those of the unit and the campus. Ability to maintain credibility of students, faculty and staff.
