Job Description / Duties

The Manager, Career & Professional Development is a member of the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers staff team. The Centre is a hub that facilitates and enhances student learning through career building enriched educational experiences. Through orientation and peer mentoring, the Centre supports new students to become successful university learners, prepared to achieve their academic, personal, and career goals. It is a central point for all graduate and undergraduate students and employers on the UBC Vancouver campus to meet, connect, network and build relationships; and to research and explore career options. The Centre connects students to workplace learning, mentoring, volunteer and leadership opportunities; and offers career- and employment-related services to students, academic departments, employers, and alumni.

Reporting to the Director, Centre for Student Involvement & Careers, the Manager, Career and Professional Development, leads a team of, career and student engagement educators, advisors, student workers, interns and volunteers. As a member of an integrated unit leadership team, the incumbent will oversee the Centre's career and professional development strategy and operations, leading teams that engage students across the University in roles and experiences that help students achieve their learning, career and personal development goals, and contribute to a student's exploration and development of their identity, values orientation, career interests, and understanding of their connection to the wider world.

Work Performed:
- Works in close partnership with the Director to develop a comprehensive career education strategy, which includes curricular and co-curricular programs and services and reflects the full range of student experiences, with particular consideration of domestic and international, graduate and undergraduate, distinct student populations, and discipline specific needs.
- Provides leadership and supervision to a team of professional staff, student staff, interns, and volunteers:
o Directs, guides, and coaches staff to achieve departmental goals and outcomes.
o Sets objectives, manages outcomes, and determines resources.
o Manages professional development planning.
o Develops, facilitates, and evaluates training programs for staff, volunteers, and students.
o Recruits, hires, evaluates performance and terminates, if required.
- Leads the establishment of a strategic framework for the career development outcomes inherent in experiential
learning.
- Ensures comprehensive reflective practices are embedded in the Centre's programs, services, and student roles to maximize student learning and career development outcomes across the unit's work.
- Develops and oversees the production of a career development curriculum to be used as the basis for student learning approaches across the Centre's outreach, course-based, online, and in-person activities. Works in collaboration with faculty and other academic partners, co-operative education staff, and leaders within VPS portfolio to ensure curriculum is academically relevant to students and based on the most current student learning and career development theories.
- Implements and oversees outcomes assessment and program evaluation. Measures the impact of programs and services in terms of student learning, career outcomes, and service to departments and faculties. Develops and implements a strategy to share results and raise awareness of the impact of experiential learning and student life activities in developing career ready graduates.
- Builds and sustains research and evidenced-based understanding to inform the University's approaches to career and professional development for students and alumni. Including: student learning outcomes, employer feedback and evidence of student preparedness, labour market and industry trends, experiential learning outcomes, relevant legislation, graduate employability outcomes, and work experiences of UBC students and alumni.
- Fosters and actively supports a campus culture of student-led initiatives and robust campus life. Consults regularly with student government, student clubs and teams, and other student groups to understand their leadership development needs and to identify ways that the Centre can support their efforts. Strategically positions the Centre as an effective and responsive resource to students and student groups.
- Cultivates, builds and maintains relationships with key stakeholders including University departments and faculties; Department Heads and Associate Deans, community professionals & community groups, employers, students, and alumni.
- Works with the Director and leadership team in the development and assessment of the strategic goals of the unit.
- Manages budgets and allocates resources in accordance with strategic priorities to meet the unit's objectives.
- Manages, sets goals, and evaluates all programs and services in consideration of the Vice President Students (VPS) Student Experience Framework and the VPS service standards: respectful, accurate, and responsive.
- Acts as a designate for the Director, Centre for Student Involvement & Careers, as required.
- Participates on University and departmental committees.
- Carries out any other related duties as necessary in keeping with the requirements and qualifications of the job.

Consequence of Error:
The Manager, Career and Professional Development, represents the University and the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers. Incorrect decisions will directly affect the University's reputation with employers and professional communities, community groups, students, Faculties, and alumni. Incorrect decisions would have impact on the University's current and future ability to recruit and retain students and engage alumni, student and alumni career outcomes, the operation of the programs and services and the reputation of the department, Faculties and the
University.

Supervision Given:
Provides leadership and management to professional staff, student staff, interns, and volunteers. As part of the unit's leadership team, contributes to attracting, developing, and retaining top talent for the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Master's degree preferred. Minimum of six years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior higher education experience an asset. Experience designing and delivering complex programs including evaluating and measuring program effectiveness required. Experience with career and/or leadership and professional development required. Outstanding developmental student advising skills and demonstrated success in teaching and developing other professional staff to educate and advise students. Deep and masterful knowledge of learning pedagogy and practice. Demonstrated experience in supervising and managing staff, preferably in a higher education environment. Ability to delegate, lead, motivate, coach and train staff. Excellent interpersonal skills and supervisory skills. Demonstrated ability to apply and evaluate literature, research, institutional data, and theoretical frameworks to establish, manage, and transform evidence-based programs and services. Knowledgeable about current trends in higher education, career development, Canadian and international labour markets, and the employability of graduates. A demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse communities of students and promote inclusion. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Further language abilities an asset. Ability to work effectively in teams and to develop effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, volunteers and community members. Ability to manage the complexity inherent within a multi faceted work environment focused on broad outcomes for students. Knowledge of University systems, structures, processes, and decision making structures is an asset.
