Category: ManagementThe Academic Advising & Career Centre (AA&CC) embraces a holistic philosophy in its delivery of integrated academic advising, learning skills, career development and employment coaching services to students. With a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, the department operates as a cross-functional team working closely with campus partners to support student success and retention, foster student engagement and strengthen the student experience at UTSC.
Under the supervision of the Manager, Career Development, the Career Strategist will provide individual coaching, develop and facilitate programs and workshops that will build our students’ and alumni’s ability to envision, research, pursue and obtain education, work and volunteer experience. The objective of this work is to enhance students’ and alumni’s career development learning during their university education and early career, and lead to positive career outcomes. The Career Strategist will facilitate students’ learning of effective work search strategies, resume and cover letter development, CV and personal statement development, interviewing techniques, and effective workplace self-management skills. He/she will also contribute to the development of online employment and career development resources for students and the creation of new employment and career development workshop programming.
In addition to supporting students in gaining relevant and meaningful experience, the incumbent will also support students in clarifying their core and transferable workplace competencies as a result of the learning from their various experiences in and out of the classroom (i.e., experiential learning).
(Minimum Qualifications)
Education:
University degree and post-graduate training or equivalent combination of education and experience, in a field such as career development, industrial/organizational psychology, human resources management, adult learning and development, or a similar field. Relevant graduate level education is preferred.
Experience:
Minimum 3 years’ experience in a programming delivery environment, with an emphasis on project and program development, implementation, assessment, group facilitation and group reflection, preferably within a post-secondary educational setting in a fast-paced student services department. Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to research, learn, and utilize theoretical approaches and best-practices for career development and student development more broadly. Demonstrated experience building relationships with academic and co-curricular partners, students and student groups.
Skills:
Persuasive and clear oral and written communication skills. Proven interpersonal and rapport building skills. Sound presentation and public speaking skills utilizing new technology, humour and creativity. Advising and coaching skills are required. Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint), and well-developed technology skills including locating and evaluating relevant material using the Internet and database searches; comfort with automated computer systems (e.g. job search databases) and electronic learning tools (e.g., Blackboard), with the ability to learn and adapt effectively to new technologies. Experience with using customized relationship management databases such as Orbis is preferred. Evidence of comfort with social and digital media (e.g. blogs, social networking, e-learning, video clips). Creative and traditional resume/cover letter and curriculum vitae (CV)/statement writing and strategies for presenting these application materials using a range of technologies. Interviewing strategy for both employment and graduate/professional school.
Possesses well developed understanding of Employment Standards Act, and employment practices in the workplace, from interviewing and selection to compensation, orientation and training practices. Strong understanding of labour market research, trends in hiring practice and work search strategies.

Ability to communicate effectively and empathetically with a diverse University student population and have a genuine desire to support the needs of students and new graduates.
Salary: $60,687 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $77,607
