The Career Advisor will assist students in their pursuit of a post university career by establishing comprehensive career plans relevant to all stages of their academic life. This is achieved by coordinating, maintaining and/or developing career development and employment-readiness related programs and services for students, alumni, and various faculties with a focus on international students and those studying in graduate and post-graduate programs.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will have:
• Bachelor’s degree in a business or human-services discipline, such as Human Resources, Psychology, Social Work, Education or a related field as determined by the Employer;
• Knowledge of career development theories/practices, post-secondary educational programs, and global and domestic job search strategies and techniques;
• Demonstrated knowledge of employment strategies and issues related to transitioning from university to the workforce with at least three years of experience providing direct support to clients on topics related to career planning, employment and job search;
• Knowledge of the unique barriers to employment faced by international students, newcomers to Canada, or non-native English speakers and strategies/techniques used to overcome these barriers;
• Experience immersed in post-graduate education or programming, familiarity with academic research and advanced degrees, and knowledgeable about how a career in industry differs from a career in academia with the ability to provide support to a student/alumnus considering either or both options;
• Excellent written, oral communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to provide guidance and detailed feedback using email and other web-based tools;
• Experience in the creation and delivery of skills development workshops and continuing education programming, including establishment of learning outcomes and assessment instruments;
• Demonstrable ability to research and analyze labour market information (LMI), the employment landscape, and the research/academic focus of academic programs to identify trends and potential career paths;
• Proficient with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, the internet, and familiar with use of database software packages; • Excellent organizational and time management capabilities with a strong service focus; and,
• Strong team, interpersonal, and intercultural skills with the proven ability to build and maintain positive relationships with various stakeholders (e.g., employers, faculty, administration, community partners).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The preferred candidate will have:
• Experience in direct service provision to international students, newcomers to Canada and/or English Language Learners.
• Successful completion of a Career Development Practitioner Certificate program and/or relevant professional designation. Prior experience working with students in a post-secondary setting.
