Job Description / Duties

The Manager, Employer and Alumni Engagement furthers the University's vision to support students to become career-ready graduates - able to connect their talents, interests, and education to the world of work. The Manager leads the strategic design, development, implementation, and evaluation of student mentorship networks, on-campus recruitment programs, industry and labour market awareness strategies, degree outcomes reporting, collaborative educational partnerships with alumni, employers, and organizations, and tests new models that position UBC alumni and employers more deeply as co-educators and mentors.

The incumbent contributes directly to the University's transformative learning and alumni engagement goals to (1) advance students' career learning, mentorship, and professional development through work and volunteer experiences, increase exposure to industry, and facilitate meaningful engagement with UBC alumni and to (2) deepen the engagement of UBC alumni, such that students and the University benefit from their perspectives, skills, and voices.

The incumbent leads the overall strategy for (1) volunteer and employment opportunities coordinated through the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers (CSI&C) for undergraduate and graduate students and alumni; (2) internal and external employer relationships; (3) student mentorship and strategic connections between students and industry professionals (4) the implementation and strategic deployment of the CSI&C's and alumni UBC's CRM technology, and; (5) liaises with units and programs within the university to promote co-operative and collaborative communication with external employers and organizations.
Organizational Status
The Manager, Employer and Alumni Engagement is a member of the Centre for Student Involvement & Careers leadership team and a member of the alumni UBC campus based alumni management team.

The CSI&C is a hub that facilitates and enhances student learning through career-building enriched educational experiences. Through orientation and peer mentoring, the CSI&C supports new students to become successful university learners, prepared to achieve their academic, personal, and career goals. It is a central point for all graduate and undergraduate students and employers on the UBC Vancouver campus to meet, connect, network and build relationships; and to research and explore career opportunities. The CSI&C connects students to workplace learning, mentoring, volunteer and leadership opportunities; and offers career- and employment-related services to students, academic departments, employers, and alumni.

Reporting to the Director, Centre for Student Involvement & Careers and the Director, Operations and Planning, alumni UBC, the Manager, Employer and Alumni Engagement, leads a team of employer and alumni engagement advisors, event planners, administrative staff, student workers, interns and volunteers. As a member of an integrated unit leadership team, the incumbent will oversee the CSI&C's employer and alumni engagement strategy and operations.

The incumbent builds and sustains crucial external and internal relationships to advance the University's goals of supporting student learning preparing career-ready graduates, and engaging with alumni to deepen connections to UBC. Externally, the Manager, Employer and Alumni Engagement is responsible for building relationships with local, national and international employers and alumni, organizations, and industry association representatives ranging from senior level executives to human resources staff. Internally, the incumbent works in close collaboration with Faculties and units both within the Vice President's Students portfolio and across the University, alumni UBC, the AMS/GSS and other student groups, and a wide range of faculty and staff in experiential learning programs including undergraduate research, cooperative education, internships, international learning, volunteer programs, and community engaged learning to help build and sustain meaningful connections between students, alumni, and employers.
Work Performed
1. Provides campus-wide strategic leadership to employer and alumni engagement to increase student connection with employers, alumni, and organizations within British Columbia, Canada, and internationally.

- Works in close partnership with the Director, CSI&C and the Director, Operations & Planning, to develop a comprehensive employer and student-alumni engagement strategy, which includes curricular and co-curricular programs and services .
- Responsible for the strategic direction, operations, student learning outcomes, financial management , and overall management of the employer and alumni engagement programming.
- Oversees and participates in the development of relationships with potential employers through company site visits, needs assessments, developing campus-wide programs and events, linking employers to campus programs, services, people, and partners, providing strategic targeted recruitment planning and acting as a resource for all on-campus recruitment activity.

Strategically develops the University's ability to support UBC alumni to access the student talent pipeline, to support alumni in their roles as employers, entrepreneurs and community leaders.
- Develops and implements comprehensive strategies to expand employment opportunities and mentorship networks for students and graduates in local, national and international markets.
- Liaises with services and programs within the university to promote co-operative and collaborative communication with external employers and coordinates initiatives to enhance external employer experiences with the University. This may include communities of practice, systems upgrades, or environmental scans of existing programs, events and/or services.
- Oversees the strategic design and development of revenue generating projects and initiatives, including career fairs, recruitment activities, and employer and industry engagement programs.
- Works collaboratively with the Director and the unit leadership team to foster a comprehensive and integrated approach to career development, with particular attention to the roles of employers and alumni in outstanding career development.
- Develops employer programming to address the needs of diverse audiences, ensuring comprehensive reflective practices are embedded into programs, services and student roles to maximize student learning and career development outcomes across the unit's work

2. Provides leadership and supervision to a team of professional staff, student staff, interns, and volunteers.

- Directs, guides, and coaches staff to achieve departmental goals and outcomes.
- Sets objectives, manages outcomes, and determines resources.
- Manages professional development planning.
- Develops, facilitates, and evaluates training programs for staff, volunteers, and students.
- Recruits, hires, evaluates performance and terminates, if required.

3. Contributes to the alumni UBC strategic plan through broad consideration of alumni involvement across all of Student Development & Services departments, programs, services.

- Develops and oversees strategic initiatives to increase student awareness of alumni UBC before graduation.
- Works collaboratively across alumni UBC and Faculties to consider broadly the ways in which alumni are engaged across all programs, events, services and experiences within Student Development & Services, in order to develop a strategic plan for student-alumni engagement, strengthening these connections to enhance career learning and employment outcomes for students.

4. Strategic Planning, Evaluation and Campus Engagement.

- Builds and sustains research and evidenced-based knowledge and understanding to inform and evaluate the University's approaches to employer and alumni engagement, including: student learning outcomes, graduate employment outcomes, employer metrics and feedback, evidence of student preparedness, labour market and industry trends, work integrated learning outcomes, relevant legislation, , and work experiences of UBC students and alumni.
- Develops and oversees outcomes assessment and program evaluation to measure the impact of programs and services in terms of student learning, career outcomes, and service to departments and Faculties.
- Cultivates, builds and maintains relationships with key stakeholders including University departments and faculties; Department Heads and Associate Deans, community professionals & community groups, employers, students, and alumni.
- Works with the Directors and leadership team in the development and assessment of the strategic goals of the unit.
- Manages operational budgets and allocates resources in accordance with strategic priorities to meet the unit's objectives.
- Manages, sets goals, and evaluates all programs and services in consideration of the Vice President Students (VPS) Student Experience Framework and the VPS service standards: respectful, accurate, and responsive.
- Acts as a designate for the Director, Centre for Student Involvement & Careers, as required.
- Participates on University and departmental committees.
- In collaboration with Student Communications Services and the CSI&C's leadership group, provides strategic content direction for the Build My Career website, CareersOnline CRM, and communications campaigns.

5. CRM Administration, Management and Strategy.

- Oversees the CSI&C's customer relationship management (CRM) strategy and software platform(s) to manage campus job postings, mentorship programs, and steward employer relationships.
- Collects, researches, prioritizes and implements ideas, best practices, and recommendations for upgrades and enhancements to web-based point of contact systems.
- Leverages technology to establish and sustain partnerships.
- Represents the CSI&C on various committees and/or tables convening around CRM technologies and systems that are coordinated through UBC IT.
- Acts as the liaison between the CSI&C and the CRM provider to ensure system is serving the business and operational needs of the unit and the University.
- Liaises with other campus colleagues in career centres and cooperative education offices utilizing Symplicity and/or other CRM platforms to initiate dialogue in best practices for employer and alumni engagement and technological platforms.

6. Carries out any other related duties as necessary in keeping with the requirements and qualifications of the job.
Supervision Received
Works independently, under general guidance from the Director, Centre for Student Involvement & Careers and Director, Operations and Planning, alumni UBC. Collaborates regularly with the Managing Director, Student Development & Services, and the unit leadership teams in setting the strategic direction for the unit, and priorities of employer and alumni engagement.
Supervision Given
Provides leadership, supervsion and management to professional staff, student staff, interns and volunteers. As a part of the unit's leadership team, contributes to attracting, developing, and retaining top talent for theCSI&C. Leads cross-functional teams and project teams. Hires and manages contract work performed by outside agencies.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Manager, Employer and Alumni Engagement represents students and the University in a variety of internal and external venues. Incorrect decisions/ judgment will directly affect UBC's reputation with the employer community and future UBC alumni. Ineffective budget planning and management will have significant operational, learning, and reputational consequences. Incorrect decisions will have impact on the employment of students, the operations of the programs, and the reputation of the Faculties and the University.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Master's degree preferred. Minimum of five to six years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior higher education experience an asset.
Deep and masterful knowledge of employer and alumni engagement practices and on campus recruitment programs.
Experience designing and delivering complex programs including evaluating and measuring program effectiveness and outcomes required.
Demonstrated experience and excellence in supervising and managing staff, preferably in a higher education environment. Ability to strategically manage a complex, revenue-generating budget with multiple funding sources.
Ability to work effectively in teams and to develop and sustain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, employers, volunteers, and community members.
Ability to delegate, lead, motivate, coach and train professional staff.
Demonstrated ability to apply and evaluate literature, research, institutional data, and theoretical frameworks to establish, manage, and transform evidence-based programs and services.
A demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse communities and promote inclusion.
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Further language abilities an asset.
Excellent computer skills and willingness to learn new systems. Knowledge of CRM and career management platforms an asset.
Knowledge of career, employment and job search strategies used by students and alumni.
Knowledge of Canadian Association of Career Educators (CACEE) standards and guidelines for ethical recruitment. Familiarity with human rights, labour legislation and current human resources practices.
Knowledge of current trends in higher education, career development, graduate employability, and local, national, and international labour markets.
Ability to work under pressure of critical deadlines.
Ability to manage the complexity inherent within a multi-faceted work environment focused on broad outcomes for students.
Knowledge of University systems, structures, processes, and decision making structures is an asset.
Valid BC Drivers License and own transportation required.
Ability to incorporate a varied workday (i.e. attend a variety of evening and weekend events year round).
