Career Services Coordinator
Student Services – Markham and Seneca@York Campus

Reporting to the Manager, Student and Campus Life, the incumbent is responsible for developing, promoting, coordinating and implementing career services at the Markham and S@Y campus. With a major emphasis on marketing and outreach to industry, the incumbent encourages employers to participate in a variety of information and recruitment activities and assists them in their recruitment efforts. The incumbent markets Career Services to staff and students through regular personal contact; markets Seneca graduates to organizations, maintaining a bank of employers and employment opportunities. The incumbent designs and delivers customized career development events, workshops and presentations in a variety of delivery modes. Provides students and recent graduates information about and assistance with career planning and development through individual and group advisement on job search strategies, resume writing, and interview skills.
Specific Accountabilities:
• Participates in identifying both internal and external needs related to graduate and student employment, resulting in the development and implementation of marketing plans and strategies for the services and programs offered by Career Services.
• Develops employment opportunities for graduates through cold calling, direct mailings and relationships with employers.
• Recruits employers to participate in a variety of career recruitment programs and activities such as job fairs, internships, job shadowing, mentoring, guest speak forums and volunteer programs.
• Actively develops relationships and liaises with employers, social agencies, college faculty, students and graduates to identify career education related needs and responds through the development and delivery of appropriate programming and services.
• Actively participates in college-wide projects involving the development of career related resource/course materials.
• Coordinates career conferences/job fairs relative to identified needs; recruits employers to participate in a variety of career recruitment programs and activities such as job fairs.
• Provides career development advisement and resources to students and recent graduates, including assisting students in identifying strengths and barriers to employment; assists students to develop job readiness skills, job search strategies and career management skills for life; advises on skills identification, resume preparation, cover letters, job search strategies, and interview techniques.
• Designs, develops and delivers in-depth seminars, workshops, written and electronic resources and training sessions on all aspects of career development and career management;
• Maintains a student career resource centre, as well as provides assistance to students in the use of the latest technology to access relevant career information.
• Coordinates career services events such as job fairs, career spotlights, guest speakers and employment tables; ensures smooth event management, responds to needs of participant and coordinates event logistics around facilities, signage, parking, decorations, food etc.
• Arranges for Student Ambassadors for events as necessary and coordinates the organization of promotional materials and information.
• Researches sector and industry employment trends, on an on-going basis; advises program areas and their students of job search strategies that speak to these trends, including sector and industry employment trends on an on-going basis.
• Provides regular statistical reports of day-to-day activities and outcomes.
• Supports Markham and S@Y Student Services Operations by advising students and other visitors to the Student Services Office and campus and referring them to the appropriate follow-up services; performs other duties as required.

Qualifications / Required Skills

• Demonstrated competencies attained through a recognized post-secondary two-year diploma in a related discipline such as marketing, human resources, career counselling or student affairs.
• Five years progressive experience in marketing/sales, career advisement, student services, human resources or recruitment. The following combination of experience is essential: dealing with people in an advisement situation; outreach and marketing within a business environment; making public presentations for instructional purposes; and event or project management.
• Strong computer skills, including the ability to use database and presentation software; extensive knowledge in finding digital information, and an ability to fully understand, promote and assist students and employers in the ‘e-cruitment’ process.
• Knowledgeable about the Canadian labour market and human relations issues relevant to recruitment and employment.
• Excellent customer service orientation, oral and written communication skills are required due to the emphasis on contact with students, faculty, administration, employers and the community at large; ability to communicate and understand the needs of a diverse student population and to interact effectively with multi-cultural/racial/able staff and the public are required.
• Strong research and marketing ability in order to promote Seneca graduates and to recruit employers to participate in Seneca activities/events; ability to design and facilitate educational presentations to the student body.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize work and coordinate tasks in order to meet end results in a fast paced environment.
• A valid Ontario Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle are required for travel between campuses and to events.

Additional Information

START DATE: As soon as possible
HOURS: 35 hours per week - Monday to Friday - 9am - 5pm (overtime as required)

NOTE: A practical assessment will be administered during the recruitment process.
