Job Description / Duties

The University of Toronto Scarborough has been a leader in Co-operative education, combining academic study with alternating work terms, for 40 years. Co-operative education gives students an opportunity to test skills learned in the classroom, and to expand their knowledge through related work experience. The Arts and Science Co-op Office is responsible for preparing students in over 25 unique program areas to compete for paid co-op work opportunities. The Office also is responsible for engaging industry partners who provide these work terms. A coordinated effort among the stakeholders of student, employer, and university Co-op programming contributes to the development of well-qualified graduates who are prepared to assume a productive role in society. With a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, the department works closely with campus and employer partners to support students as they work to achieve their academic and Co-op aspirations.

The Co-op Coordinator, Student Development is responsible for coaching and preparing students for success in finding co-op work term placements. S/he works in a team directly with other Student Development Coordinators, and liases with co-op support staff and other coordinators who work on employer development. Key responsibilities include: preparing co-op students for the work term and job search process through individual appointments, drop-in sessions, tip sheets, and web-based material, preparing and delivering specialized co-op workshops, presenting components of the Navigating the World of Work (NWOW) work term preparation course curriculum; advising students with regard to co-op job selection and career choices; overseeing student coaching activities that prepare senior co-op students to actively mentor junior co-op students; advising students on resume and cover letter best practices; and assisting in the maintenance of existing employer relationships through networking events. He/she undertakes a commitment to continuous professional learning and development. In addition, the Coordinator participates in departmental meetings, maintains and files student records, and contributes to reports.

Qualifications / Required Skills


A University degree and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification in career development, career counselling, human resources, adult learning and development, or a graduate degree in a relevant area will be considered a strong asset.

Three years previous experience that combines: experience working directly in support of students, new graduates or individuals in career transition; experience in student professional development, knowledge of workplace standards, recruitment and hiring practices, and performance management techniques gained through a role in a co-operative education or internship program is strongly preferred.

Excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong presentation, public speaking and interpersonal skills, with a student-focused commitment to service delivery. Able to manage conflicting demands and work well under pressure, with a solid attention to detail and organization. Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office; AV equipment; and sourcing information and data using the Internet and social media sites such as LinkedIn, with the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies. Exposure to customized relationship management databases such as Symplicity or Orbis is preferred.

Broad knowledge of trends in employer hiring practices, occupations, current labour market conditions and a strong understanding of student and career development theories. Knowledge of adult learning principles including facilitation, use of digital/social media, online learning concepts, and learning outcomes. Demonstrated commitment to working as a team player. Demonstrated integrity, initiative, flexibility and creative problem solving, with a commitment to excellence and results orientation. Self-motivated learner with demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development. Ability to communicate effectively and empathetically with a diverse university student population and have a genuine desire to meet the needs of students.
